The Center for Civic and Urban Engagement sponsored two Geography majors, Taylor Hafley '10 and Phil Hagee '11 to use their knowledge of GIS to help the City of Springfield do some critical analysis of neighborhoods. Their first task was to do a housing study in two neighborhoods to determine which areas should receive the most incentives for home buyers. This was primarily based upon the location and condition of the homes. Second, they studied five census tracts to locate areas for possible green space enhancement.

Taylor Hafley and Phil Hagee"Overall, I think these type of opportunities are what make this program (and Wittenberg) so special.  We are gaining experience in our fields and having to face the problems that are associated with our areas of study.  This internship has tested our skills we learn in the classroom and makes us think about how we can use those skills in the most appropriate way.  At the same time, we are gaining a familiarity with the Springfield community and have had the opportunity to meet some amazing people who really make this city go.  I believe the experience has helped us both on an personal and professional level." said Taylor Hafley of his experience this summer.
